Abstract
At the inception of the Olympic Games, women’s participation was highly limited, with Pierre de Coubertin’s negative stance on the role of women in sports laying the foundation for this inequality. However, from the late 20th century onwards, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted policies aimed at increasing the participation of female athletes. The 2024 Paris Olympics marked the pinnacle of these efforts, achieving full gender parity in the number of male and female athletes. This study examines the historical development and current state of gender equality in the modern Olympic Games through the application of PESTEL and trend analysis methodologies. The article analyses the IOC’s political, economic, social, technological, and legal strategies to evaluate the impact of its gender equality policies. Furthermore, it highlights the role of media representation, sponsorship, and women’s rights movements in this process. The primary aim of the study is to emphasize that gender equality must be achieved not only quantitatively but also qualitatively.
