Abstract
This study examines the impact of fans’ motivation to follow their teams on social media on internet gambling addiction. To this end, a cross-sectional study was conducted using a screening model. The sample group consisted of 403 sports team fans, selected using the convenience sampling method. The following tools were used to collect data: the “Personal Information Form”, the “Fans’ Motivation to Follow Their Teams on Social Media Scale” and the “Internet Gambling Addiction Scale”. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 25.0 package program. For the data analysis, an Independent Samples t-Test was used for two-group comparisons, a One-Way ANOVA was used for three-or-more-group comparisons, and a Pearson Correlation Test was used to examine the relationship between the variables, in accordance with the study’s purpose. According to the findings, fans’ motivations to follow their teams on social media show statistically significant differences according to gender, income level, and the team they support. Internet gambling addiction also shows statistically significant differences according to age, marital status, and income level. The results show that men are more motivated to follow their teams on social media than women. As age increases, so does the level of internet gambling addiction. Similarly, internet gambling addiction levels are higher among married participants than single participants. Internet gambling addiction levels increase with income.
