Abstract Vegan and vegetarian dietary patterns have gained increasing attention in recent years, both in society and among athletes. This study aimed to examine the levels of sports awareness and nutritional knowledge among individuals in Türkiye who follow vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets and identify differences based on demographic variables. The study was conducted using a correlational survey model and included 200 voluntary participants (152 females and 48 males). Data were collected through the Sports Awareness Scale and the Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for Adults (YETBİD). Statistical analyses were performed using the t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson’s correlation coefficient, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The participants’ nutritional knowledge levels were moderate (M = 3.38 ± 0.43), while their sports awareness levels were high (M = 3.47 ± 0.64). Male participants demonstrated significantly higher sports awareness than females (p < 0.01), and individuals who engaged in regular exercise had significantly greater sports knowledge, social-individual benefit perception, and awareness levels compared to those who did not exercise (p < 0.001). Significant differences in nutritional knowledge and awareness levels were also observed according to age, income, and educational status. A weak but statistically significant negative correlation was found between nutritional knowledge and sports awareness (r = –0.220, p < 0.01). The findings of this study indicate that regular exercise enhances both sports awareness and nutritional knowledge levels, while demographic variables contribute to meaningful variations in these levels. Moreover, it can be concluded that providing accurate information and promoting regular exercise habits are essential for supporting vegan and vegetarian individuals in maintaining a healthier adaptation to their dietary practices.
