The Missing Link in Hikikomori Literature: A Bibliometric and SWOT Analysis Highlighting the Need for Physical Activity

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the development and strategic directions of global scientific production regarding the phenomenon of hikikomori between 2005 and 2026 from a bibliometric perspective. Within the scope of the research, 323 academic publications retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using VOSviewer and Bibliometrix software. Findings indicate that the literature, which gained momentum starting in 2011, reached its peak in 2023, with Japan maintaining its leadership with the highest publication frequency (f=414). Thematic analyses and co-occurrence networks reveal that the literature is predominantly stabilized in individual-centered areas such as clinical psychiatry, depression, anxiety, and adolescent mental health. SWOT analysis results determined that social policy, interdisciplinary intervention strategies, and particularly physical activity-based models have not yet been sufficiently deepened in the literature. The study suggests that in combating hikikomori, psychiatric definitions alone are insufficient, and physical activity-mediated social reintegration models should be positioned as a strategic intervention axis. Consequently, this research serves as a data-driven guide for researchers and policymakers by presenting current gaps and future projections in the hikikomori literature.

Keywords: Hikikomori, Social Withdrawal, Bibliometric Analysis, Mental Health, Physical Activity.
