Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of social media use and social media use behaviors on mental fatigue awareness among young athletes and to determine whether these variables differ according to athletic level, age, and daily social media use duration. The study group for this research, which employs a cross-sectional and relational model based on a quantitative research approach, consists of 257 student-athletes. Data were collected using the General Social Media Use Scale, the Athlete Social Media Use Behaviors Scale, and the Mental Fatigue Awareness Scale for Athletes. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings indicated positive and significant relationships between general social media use and athlete social media use behaviors. Mental fatigue awareness was found to be positively and weakly associated with social routines integration (r = .20, p < .001), athlete social media use behaviors (r = .24, p < .001), content creation (r = .28, p < .001), and usage frequency (r = .24, p < .001). Mental fatigue awareness also differed significantly according to athletic level, age, and daily social media use duration. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that athlete social media use behaviors positively and significantly predicted mental fatigue awareness (β = .27, p < .001), whereas general social media use was not a significant predictor (β = −.06, p = .451). The model explained 5.9% of the variance in mental fatigue awareness (R² = .059).
