Araştırma TÜBİTAK 2209-A Üniversite Öğrencileri Araştırma Projeleri Destekleme Programı tarafından sağlanan destekle gerçekleştirilen “Spor Bilimleri Öğrencilerinin Karbon Ayak İzi Farkındalıklarının İncelenmesi” başlıklı projeden üretilmiştir.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the carbon footprint awareness levels of Sports Sciences Faculty students and to examine this awareness according to various variables such as gender, department of study, place of residence, and whether they have received environmental education. This research was derived from a project titled “Investigation of Carbon Footprint Awareness of Sports Sciences Students,” supported by the TÜBİTAK 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program. The population of the study consists of students studying at Faculties of Sports Sciences in Turkey, while the sample comprises 487 volunteer students (249 female, 238 male) studying at Kırıkkale University Faculty of Sports Sciences during the 2024-2025 academic year. In the study, which utilized the survey model—a quantitative research method—a “Personal Information Form” and the “Carbon Footprint Awareness Scale (CFAS)” were used as data collection tools. Descriptive statistics, Independent Samples t-Test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were applied in the data analysis. According to the research findings, the food awareness of female students was found to be significantly higher than that of male students. It was determined that the awareness levels of students who received environmental education regarding electricity and waste management were higher than those who did not receive such education. In the comparison between departments, it was observed that the awareness levels of Recreation department students were lower compared to other departments. Furthermore, it was determined that the carbon footprint awareness of students who lived in a village prior to their undergraduate education was significantly higher than those living in cities and metropolitan areas. In conclusion, it can be said that receiving environmental education increases awareness in individual control areas such as electricity and waste but remains insufficient in macro issues such as transportation; that Recreation department students have lower awareness levels compared to other departments; and that students with a village background possess higher environmental consciousness compared to students living in urban areas. These findings indicate that carbon footprint awareness among sports science students is shaped not only by academic education but also by socio-cultural backgrounds, daily life experiences, and the environmental dynamics of their specific disciplines.
