Abstract

The relationship between the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) total and individual test scores and the asymmetry of balance of the lower extremities, as well as the predictive effect on young male basketball players, was analysed in this study. This was a cross-sectional correlational study that consisted of 52 licensed male basketball players volunteering for the study at the age of 18.90 ± 1.21 years and having a sport experience of 7.83 ± 1.77 years. The assessment of functional movement was carried out through the seven FMS tests. These tests were individually scored in range of 0 to 3 points with a maximal total of 21 points. Reach distances for both lower extremities were used to calculate limb-specific composite scores, and balance asymmetry percentage was analyzed. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were used. FMS total score was not significantly correlated with asymmetry percentage (r = −0.059), dominant composite score (r = −0.031), or non-dominant composite score (r = −0.013; all p > 0.05). Asymmetry percentage showed a very strong positive correlation with dominant composite score (r = 0.921; p < 0.01). The regression model including FMS total and individual test scores was not statistically significant overall (R² = 0.256; adjusted R² = 0.117; p = 0.094). Within this model, trunk stability push-up (TSPU) had a significant negative coefficient (β = −0.399; p = 0.015), whereas shoulder mobility (SM) had a significant positive coefficient (β = 0.342; p = 0.049). Coefficients for the other tests and total score were not significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, FMS total score was not significantly associated with balance asymmetry in this sample. The findings suggest that basketball player assessments should not focus exclusively on the FMS total score; individual test results and limb-specific dynamic balance measurements should be considered together.
