Abstract
This study investigated the effects of an 8-week structured imagery-based mental training program performed before training on palding-chagi kicking performance and lower-extremity skin surface temperature parameters in adolescent taekwondo athletes. A randomized controlled pretest–posttest experimental design was used. Adolescent taekwondo athletes were assigned to a mental training group (mental training + routine training; n=16) or a control group (routine training only; n=15). The mental training group completed imagery-based sessions three times per week for 8 weeks before regular training. Palding-chagi performance was assessed using an electronic scoring system, and muscle skin temperatures were measured with a thermal camera. The mental training group showed significant improvements in palding-chagi performance on both sides (p<0.05), whereas no significant changes were observed in the control group (p>0.05). Post-test comparisons revealed higher performance values in the mental training group compared with the control group (p<0.01). Significant changes were mainly observed in maximum temperature and temperature difference parameters in the mental training group (p<0.05). Mental training applied before training improves technical performance and affects neuromuscular-related skin temperature responses in adolescent taekwondo athletes.
Keywords Taekwondo, mental training, imagery, thermal imaging, adolescent athletes.
