Abstract
This study aimed to examine the mediating roles of psychological perception and environmental perception in the effects of professional thinking competence and personality competence on burnout among sports referees. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design, and the direct and indirect relationships among the variables were tested using structural equation modeling. The sample consisted of 234 active referees from different sports disciplines. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 and AMOS 22.0 through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability and validity analyses, structural equation modeling, and mediation analysis with 5,000 bootstrap resamples. The findings indicated that the five-factor model demonstrated a good fit to the data (χ²/df = 1.371, CFI = .955, TLI = .950, RMSEA = .040, 90% CI [.032, .048], SRMR = .0562) and yielded lower AIC (719.440) and BIC (950.947) values than the alternative models. Structural model results showed that professional thinking competence and personality competence positively predicted psychological and environmental perceptions and negatively predicted burnout, while psychological and environmental perceptions also had significant negative effects on burnout. The 95% bootstrap confidence intervals for all indirect effects excluded zero, supporting the significant mediating roles of psychological and environmental perceptions. In conclusion, psychological and environmental perceptions represent important explanatory mechanisms in the relationship between referees’ professional thinking and personality competencies and burnout, and the proposed structural model was empirically supported.
