Abstract
This study aims to investigate the correlation between parents’ religious engagement and adolescents’ perceptions of physical education and sports, including the influences of religion, familial setting, and adolescent health. The sample for the cross-sectional and correlational survey study comprised 612 high school students from Bingöl province. There were 292 female participants and 320 male participants. Data were gathered utilizing a personal information form, the Religious Life Scale, and the Attitudes Towards Sports Scale. The study of the data employed frequency analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey test, Pearson correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple linear regression. The results indicated that parents had a pronounced level of religious engagement, whereas students demonstrated a moderate disposition towards athletics. Male students, those enrolled in sports high schools, individuals actively engaged in sports, and students with a familial sports participant had elevated attitude ratings towards sports. A favorable albeit weakly significant association was identified between the level of parental religious engagement and attitudes towards sports. Regression analysis reveals that active sports participation, educational institution type, gender, and familial sports culture are more influential factors in elucidating views regarding sports. Thus, parental religion seems to have a minimal correlation with teenagers’ perspectives on sports, whereas sports experience and familial sports culture offer more substantial explanatory frameworks.
Keywords: Religiosity; adolescent; physical education; sport; family.
